Begin Where You Are

There is no perfect time or place to begin. New projects always begin with an idea. Whether the idea is big or small, it doesn't matter. All we know is that we are ready to create.

But so often we let any lack of knowing, any uncertainty, delay us from getting going. We sit idle, waiting for the idea to fully form in our imagination. Ironically, as much as we are waiting for that idea to complete itself in our mind, that idea is waiting for us to let it physically manifest. Sometimes we have to the courage to let go of perfection and the illusion of right timing, and just, begin.

As some of you know, Samantha's Bread + Butter isn't an entirely new idea for me. It began as a healthy lifestyle blog in 2011, shortly before I graduated university. After two years of blogging, I found myself in an unexpected situation: I was making a transition out of the eco-fashion industry in New York City, and beginning a new job as project manager (and soon after, executive director) of Dream Change. It wasn't long before Dream Change began to consume most of my time, and I had little creative energy to devote to personal projects. Alas, I shut down my blog and cancelled my domain.

Three years later, I still find myself fiercely passionate about the topics I used to write about on Samantha's Bread + Butter. Although I have three jobs now instead of one, I've come to learn that time is a created thing, and that we make enough of it for what we want in our lives.

The love for food has always been present in my life, but over the past few years I have developed a passion specifically for slow food and slow lifestyle. Lately I've been nagging myself, trying to figure out how I can create one project that combines all of my passions:

  • Hospitality
  • Event planning
  • Business
  • Photography
  • Design

I've been brainstorming, journaling, business planning and dreaming. You know...waiting for the idea to fully form (sound familiar?) And today, finally, I've decided that it is simply time to begin. I may not know entirely how I'm going to combine all my passions into this one space, but I'm going to work on it and see where it goes. Because it will go...somewhere.

What I do know for certain is that Samantha's Bread + Butter is back, and that I have so many new (and soon to come) recipes, ideas and stories that I can't wait to share with you. All I want to do is create; to create something beautiful, something useful...something that brings joy to those around me. Because to do that is one of the greatest feelings in the world.

Wherever you find yourself today...if you have an exciting idea brewing inside of you, and you feel eager to bring it to life, please consider these words: begin where you are. There is no shame is starting small. The idea will grow once you begin. Have a little courage. Have a little trust.
